Each week we’ll give you useful tips for the IELTS test which will help you to improve your performance at the exam. This week our tip is about Writing Task 1.
In Academic Writing Task 1 you are asked to describe statistical information. This may be presented in the form of a graph other kinds of charts or statistics table.
In the task:
- You are not asked to interpret the information, or look for any explanation of the figures etc.
- You have a minimum of 150 words and are not advised to spend more than 20 minutes.
We’ll start with some DOs and DONTs for the Writing Task 1.
DO the following:
- Describe the data clearly and correctly
- Make it clear what period of time you are referring to so that you know what tense to use. For example whether it is all past information or from past to present / looking into the future etc.
- Explain what trends there are in the given tables and charts.
- Give some specific examples to emphasise the trends and support your statements.
